Do You Ever Get the Distinct Feeling that You've Been Conned into Something?

I Do...

You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!

THIS might just be the funniest damned site on the Internet!

I really, really thought I had seen it all from the loony left. I mean, just go DUmpster diving sometime at the Democratic Underground, or read some of the diary entries from the Kossacks at Daily Kos. There are many among them who dwell in fantasyland, wear tinfoil hats and are out and out lunatics - I have come to accept this.

However, I was totally unprepared for the absolute preposterousness of this:

PRE$$TITUTES

Q. What Is A Pre$$titute?

A Pre$$titute is a member of the press who uses his or her media presence to support the Bush administration. Our emphasis is on "non-partisan" mainstream reporters and media outlets who continue to provide cover for the administration despite a litany of scandals, not least of which is the disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina. Wolf Blitzer, Chris Matthews, Paula Zahn, Dana Milbank, Howard Kurtz, Kyra Phillips, Bill Schneider, Tim Russert, Howard Fineman, Norah O'Donnell, Elizabeth Bumiller, Adam Nagourney, the Bush apologists at ABC's The Note and others with a similar veneer of neutrality exert a more insidious influence on the public debate than rabid partisans like Limbaugh, Coulter, and Hannity.

(Emphasis mine.)

Now, I know what you are thinking: A parody site in the Blame Bush! vein, right? Nope! This guy is as serious as a heart attack - not to mention as far gone from reality as a magical flying unicorn. [UPDATE: Or is he really serious? See Below.] Want to see some more?

Q. Why This Site?

We believe Pre$$titution is the First Cause of the worst presidency in U.S. history. The transformation of George W. Bush from a smarmy dilettante to a supposedly resolute, pious, compassionate leader is the result of a half decade of methodical Pre$$titution, both by hard right partisans and by reporters who have abdicated their interrogative role in order to pander to the administration. It is "death by a thousand cuts" in reverse: the cumulative effect of tens of thousands of implicit and explicit pro-Bush stories and soundbites has been to create the illusion of legitimacy around an individual uniquely unqualified to be president. Our aim is to make that process transparent.

Pre$$titutes use sophisticated persuasion tactics to influence public perceptions and to affect the political landscape. When cable networks cover Bush's stage-managed speeches with captions that read "Bush Stands Firm," a deliberate choice is being made to bolster his image. The same holds true for television anchors who re-assemble and re-frame Bush's mangled press conferences. Pre$$titutes also employ more subtle tactics, such as using 'negative' stories to push a pro-Bush narrative. For example, saying Bush is "unwavering" in the face of poor poll numbers - rather than simply reporting the numbers - plays into the image of a steadfast leader. Another example of Pre$$titution is to create news and then comment on it. During the 2004 campaign, the cable networks gave round-the-clock coverage to the Swift Boat slime machine. Weeks into the coverage, these same outlets began asking why Kerry's attackers were getting so much traction in denigrating his military service.

By choosing what to cover, what not to cover, and how to cover it, Pre$$titutes influence ALL aspects of American politics. Touch-screen voting machines fixing elections? If the Pre$$titutes don’t cover it, few Americans know or care. Abu Ghraib a permanent stain on America? Not if the Pre$$titutes lose interest and move on to Michael Jackson. Our troops coming home in flag-draped coffins? Not if the Pre$$titutes won’t show it to you. Saddam Hussein unconnected to 9/11? Not if the Pre$$titutes let the administration conflate the two. (Even now, nearly half of Americans believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the 9/11 attacks.)

Bush's resilience in the face of scandals that would bring down any other government is primarily a factor of Pre$$titutes' willingness to give him a pass. If they adopted the same derisive tone they reserve for Democrats like Howard Dean or Al Gore, and if they hammered away as relentlessly as they did on the Natalee Holloway story, he wouldn't be president today.

(Emphasis mine.)

Do I even need to start fisking this, or is just reprinting it enough? Yeah. I agree. It fisks itself to anyone but a Barking Moonbat! But wait, there's more!

Q. How Does Pre$$titution Work?

Commission - intentionally saying or doing something to advance the Bush agenda. Example: the Associated Press describes a group of Bush’s supporters as a “patriotic camp” opposing an “anti-war demonstration.”

Omission - intentionally neglecting to say or do something that might damage the Bush administration. Example: prioritizing a manufactured crisis like a missing girl in Aruba for weeks on end in order to consume air-time that could go to a real scandal like the Valerie Plame case.

False Balance - reporting two sides where one is sufficient with the explicit intention of diluting the power of a story that might damage the Bush administration. Just because one military mother is confronting a president who sent her son to die, it doesn’t necessarily follow that we should start hearing from mothers who support Bush. It would be like bundling the New Orleans disaster with a story about a safe, sunny day in Los Angeles.

(Emphasis mine.)

I must admit, I'm jealous. That "False Balance" bit is funnier than anything I could have written myself. I am beginning to think that right-leaning parody artists are going to be put out of business. There is nothing we can come up with anymore to poke fun at the fever-swamp left that is more outrageous than --- their OWN WORDS!

One more bite from the rotten apple:

Q. Why Do People Think The Media Is Liberal?

People think the media is liberal because for more than thirty years rightwingers have used the negative “liberal media” mantra as a political tool to browbeat the press into skewing their coverage to the right. The constant decrying of the media’s “liberal bias” has provided cover for the creeping rightwing stranglehold over all facets of the American press. Rather than scrutinize this claim, the majority of Americans, including many Democrats, have bought into the myth of a liberal media despite the fact that partisan rightwing voices dominate the media landscape.

Inevitably, people will counter the above assessment with some poll that "proves" the majority of reporters are liberal. The problem with this line of reasoning is that it ignores the distinct difference between a journalist with a personal political leaning and a journalist who injects an overtly partisan point of view into their reporting. Think of the difference this way: when’s the last time you heard someone on NPR adopt the Limbaugh/Hannity/Coulter/O'Reilly approach and call a conservative a terrorist-appeaser or traitor?

(Emphasis mine.)

I think this site must be coming to us through some portal from an alternate universe or the Bizarro World of Superman comics fame. Otherwise, someone needs to book this guy a rubber room at the Happy Time Hotel. Too funny!

Oh, did I forget to mention he's paying people to provide him with tips??? A fool and his money... you know the rest.

UPDATE 8:28pm CDT: Ace of Spades has a post on this, too, but based on some of what he says, I'm not so sure anymore that this isn't a gag...

But then I started to think this was some sort of conservative parody. Why? Well, for one thing, they sent me an email. A mass email, yeah, but somehow I was on their list.

Now, why would someone launching a far-flung over-the-moon lefty press conspiracy site send out an e-mail to a right-leaning blog like Ace of Spades HQ? Is this also how Lorie Byrd found out about it? Why would they e-mail her? That's got to make you wonder, doesn't it?

This site is one of two things:

1) A wickedly clever piece of satire.

2) An honest-to-goodness loonfest.

The jury is still out.

But if he's not serious, what gives with the pay for tips??? I honestly don't know what to make of this...

New Orleans Rhapsody

[Sung to the tune of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody]

Time for more left wing
Paranoid fantasy,
Caught in the flood tide,
Out of touch with reality,
They spin their lies,
They just criticize and seethe,
"Hicks from those red states, show them no sympathy!"
"Because they're filthy scum, we all know!"
"Hit 'em high, hit 'em low!"
They can't shut their blow-holes,
They've got Bush Derangement you see, you see

Dubya's, the one they blame,
They're all calling for his head,
"There's 10,000 people dead!"
Dubya, Schumer's raising funds,
And Landrieu's gonna punch you in the nose!
Dubya, ooo
Nagin let the buses drown,
And Blanco barred the Red Cross from New Orleans,
But to Dems, but to Dems, the facts never seem to matter

Look out, the storm has come,
It's a category five,
Need big-screen TV's to survive!
Goodbye, everybody - you've got to go,
Better leave that loot behind and save your tush!
Dubya, ooo (Hurricane force winds blow)
"Kyoto went unsigned!"
"It's all his fault the levees weren't improved!"

[Guitar solo]

"I see a little Chimpbushitler of a man!"
"Dubya Bush! Dubya Bush! Sole cause of global warming!"
"FBI hunts Nagin!" "Cannibals crave Cajun meat!"
Media drones, (Media drones)
Media drones, (Media drones)
Media drones, inundate the Superdome!

"They're just the black folks, Bush never loved them!"
"They're just the poor folks, come from poor families -
Bush wants them dead, he's a monster you see!"
Sean Penn's got a boat, cannot make it float!
Not Nagin! No - It's Bush's fault you know - not Blanco
Not Nagin! It's Bush's fault you know - not Blanco
Not Nagin! It's Bush's fault you know - not Blanco
Bush's fault you know - not Blanco (Never, never, never)
Bush's fault you know - not Blanco-o-o-o-o
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
"Oh, Where's FEMA? Where's FEMA?"
"Where's FEMA? Where'd they go?"
"George Dubya Bush bombed the levees and let in the sea!"
"The sea!"
"The sea!"

[Begin Wayne's World head bang...]

So you think you can snow me with all of your lies?
You're all so full, there's brown in the whites of your eyes!
You're crazy - can't believe you're this crazy!
Just cut it out - just cut it right out, ya hear!

(Too bad, so sad...)

None of this stuff matters,
Anyone can see,
No time for the blame game - while we've still got people in need

Time to shut your blow-holes...

[Gong!]

"Scapegoats Can Wait"

Dick Meyer of CBSNews.com writes something that I find shocking in an MSM web site:

This isn't going to be a popular column so I may as well get straight to the point: if the flawed response to the unexpected and unprecedented natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina reflects poorly on our country, so does the unrelenting and unforgiving search for scapegoats, incompetents and culprits.

Sadly, going about the task of aiding our fellow citizens who have been affected by Katrina is hard work, while playing the blame game isn't. So it's no surprise that so many of the political class would rather blame someone else for a problem than do something constructive to solve it.

The trickle of finger pointing that I complained about last week has become a tsunami of truculent 'I-told-you-so' s. If the energy, wiliness and zeal politicians and chatterers are investing in the blame game went instead to the continuing — actually endless — relief challenges, we'd be getting more done. I mean that.

Instead, with New Orleans still soggy and displaced thousands in agony, Washington is moving on — to hearings, post-mortems and probably commissions. If that stuff worked, wouldn't, by definition, the response to Katrina have been more successful?

Emphasis mine.

And that's the problem with Washington. Or, more specifically, with it's liberal Democratic politicians and interest groups. They care more about politics than the people who they claim to serve. How many of the people calling for investigations have actually made a trip to the Gulf Coast to see what's happening to the people there? How many have actually done anything to improve the lot of the displaced?

We're still smack dab in the middle of this crisis. Uprooted, devastated poor people are not helped by editorials insisting this calamity was caused by Bush's callousness to the poor, or Republican politicians berating Louisiana's Democratic officials, or administration officials defending some of the clear cut blunders or the House Minority Leader saying of President Bush, "Oblivious, in denial, dangerous."

Meyer does the "moderate" thing by being even-handed in his criticisms, but everyone knows which side is playing the blame game the hardest. Hint: it's the same side that will be damaged the most when a full post-mortem is done.

STOP THE PRESSES: Red Cross Was Ready to Roll with Aid Immediately After the Flood, Told to Stay Out of New Orleans by Louisiana State Officials!

So it was all George W. Bush's and FEMA's fault.

Uh-huh. Right...

From John Hawkins at Right Wing News:

The Louisiana Department of Homeland Security To The Red Cross: You Can't Give Food To The People Stuck In The Superdome

Major Garrett: Well, the Red Cross, Hugh, had pre-positioned a literal vanguard of trucks with water, food, blankets and hygiene items. They're not really big into medical response items, but those are the three biggies that we saw people at the New Orleans Superdom, [sic] and the convention center, needing most accutely. And all of us in America, I think, reasonably asked ourselves, geez. You know, I watch hurricanes all the time. And I see correspondents standing among rubble and refugees and evacuaees. But I always either see that Red Cross or Salvation Army truck nearby. Why don't I see that?

Hugh Hewitt: And the answer is?

Major Garrett: The answer is the Louisiana Department of Homeland Security, that is the state agency responsible for that state's homeland security, told the Red Cross explicitly, you cannot come.

Hugh Hewitt: Now Major Garrett, on what day did they block the delivery? Do you know specifically?

Major Garrett: I am told by the Red Cross, immediately after the storm passed.

Hugh Hewitt: Okay, so that would be on Monday afternoon.

Major Garrett: That would have been Monday or Tuesday. The exact time, the hour, I don't have. But clearly, they had an evacuee situation at the Superdome, and of course, people gravitated to the convention center on an ad hoc basis. They sort of invented that as another place to go, because they couldn't stand the conditions at the Superdome.

Hugh Hewitt: Any doubt in the Red Cross' mind that they were ready to go, but they were blocked?

Major Garrett: No. Absolutely none. They are absolutely unequivocal on that point.

(Emphasis mine.)

Oh, and all you hate-spewing "Bush is to blame" idiots on the left... Do you still want that investigation? I'm game!

******************************

UPDATE 9/8:

Confirmation of the above story as shown at the American Red Cross' website:

Hurricane Katrina: Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans?

• Acess [sic] to New Orleans is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities and while we are in constant contact with them, we simply cannot enter New Orleans against their orders.

• The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

The Political Teen has video of Major Garrett's explosive report from Brit Hume's show on Fox News.

Radio Blogger has the complete transcript of the Hewitt/Garrett interview quoted above.

Hugh Hewitt has more at his own blog.

The Anchoress has provided more evidence:

Hmmm...before anyone says this is all Republican Hooey, they should probably know this:

A Red Cross official, Carol Miller, said on NPR's Diane Rehm show this morning that the Red Cross was told not to provide aid at the Superdome by the Louisiana, not U.S., Department of Homeland Security.

Audio here (click link on left side of page) the comment is about 35:40 into the show.

Lorie Byrd at PoliPundit couldn't seem to find any coverage on CNN. The discussion thread is lively (as usual), and includes a comment by ordi, whom the Anchoress credits for the NPR tip.

Captain Ed at Captain's Quarters has more, including this nugget:

It's also worth noting that the Red Cross gets more access to the detainees at Guantanamo Bay than the people still stuck inside New Orleans.

Once again, we have more evidence that the problems in getting relief to Louisianans stuck inside the New Orleans basin directly relate to decisions made at the state and local level, not federal -- and that the people in charge of the overall effort have been and continue to be Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco. The meme blaming Bush for Hurricane Katrina continues to fall apart, even without wide coverage of the facts by the Exempt Media.

Voice of Reason at Politicalities applauds the efforts of the rescue workers (including numerous pictures) and says this:

The Democrats were so eager to politicize this bloody tragedy that they couldn't wait to start pointing fingers until the bodies were all dead, much less cold. So fine, let's point the finger. Let's point it squarely where it belongs. Let's point it to the leader of the police force that suffered from mass desertion, some of whose members turned to looting, and which is now enjoying taxpayer-paid Vegas vacations while their city lies in rubble and their citizens huddle miserably in makeshift shelters in other states. Let's point it to the mayor who failed to follow his own evacuation plan, who let hundreds of potentially life-saving buses become pretty islands in satellite pictures, to whom "mandatory evacuation" apparently means "pretty please" and not "leave now or be arrested."

And most especially, let's point it at Governor Blanco, who is continuing to harm New Orleans even as we speak. By the way, what a delightfully appropriate name she has! It means "white", which she is, but it also shares the Middle French blanc as an ancestor with the English word blank. Blank is her mind when it should be on the suffering of those she is sworn to protect. Blank is her face at her press conferences where she boldly exerts her authority to do... nothing. Blank are the pages of the disaster plan she and Mayor Nagin follow, although not of the disaster plan they were supposed to follow....

Betsy Newmark at Betsy's Page tells us that Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit had this story a couple of days ago, but it apparently got lost in the "flood" of news (so to speak).

'Round the 'Sphere: September 7, 2005

Sorry for the lack of fresh content of late, but I've been doing more reading than writing this past week. So, to tide you over until the next inspiration strikes, I want to share with you some of the very best stuff I have found out there in this thing we call the blogosphere recently, divided (more or less) by subject.

HURRICANE KATRINA

UPDATE - MAJOR STORY BREWING: Apparently, the Red Cross was all set to help those poor folks stranded at the Superdome - immediately after the storm - but they were ordered to stay out of New Orleans - by Louisiana state officials! Unreal!

Bill Whittle (aka Proteus) is, bar none, THE best essayist in the blogosphere! People wait for each and every nugget from his Eject! Eject! Eject! site with baited breath, and he rarely disappoints. This week's must read, Tribes, hits the nail right on the head, as usual!

Rick Moran at Right Wing Nut House has an indispensable article, Katrina: Response Timeline.

Jason at Generation Why? presents: Hurricane Katrina - The Political Blame Roundup.

Next, we have the curious case of Sen. Mary "Sugar Ray" Landrieu, who said this regarding criticism of Louisiana officials' response to Hurricane Katrina:

"If one person criticizes them or says one more thing, including the president of the United States, he will hear from me," she said on the ABC's This Week. "One more word about it after this show airs and I might likely have to punch him. Literally."

(Emphasis mine.)

But Ace of Spades has an excerpt from Sen. Landrieu's own website, which points the finger at her precious state and local officials: Quick, Before She Deletes It: Senator Landrieu's Own Website Puts Onus on Local Authorities for Immediate Response . So, Senator, are you going to punch yourself?

(Thanks for the image, Pat Curley!)

Are those of you on the left SURE you wanna play this blame game thing? Better read New Orleans CYA Campaign Takes "Gotcha" to a New Low at Hog on Ice first. Then read Ace of Spades When the Levee Board Story Breaks.... You might just change your mind. Provided you actually HAVE one!

Still not convinced the blame game is not a good idea for the left to play? Ahem! For those of you claiming Bush didn't do enough to take control of the situation in New Orleans sooner, ever hear of the Posse Comitatus Act? PoliPundit reader Oak Leaf, an Army Reservist, will be happy to enlighten you through the good graces of Lorie Byrd via Civil Defense Or Lawfare? At the risk of being socked in the nose by Sen. Landrieu, Lorie also provides us with this: Blanco's 24 Hour Delay.

Of course, you might just keep on plugging away with the "it's all Bush's fault" meme. After all, it seems to be working so well for you, now doesn't it?

Predictably, in response to the tragedy, the right half of the blogosphere rolled up its sleeves, while the left half was too busy wagging its fingers at Bush. (Sigh.) See Right Wing Nut House and The Politburo Diktat for the sad details.

John Hawkins at Right Wing News has more leftist compassion on full display with Drown And Die, You Arrogant Hillbilly Southern-Fried Leeches! It's so nice to know how much they really care, isn't it?

AMERICAN HOSTAGE FREED IN IRAQ
Dr. Rusty Shackleford at The Jawa Report has been personally involved in keeping the plight of American hostage Roy Hallums, who disappeared Nov. 1, 2004 in Iraq, from being forgotten. Today, Roy Hallums has finally been freed! Understandably, Dr. Rusty is overjoyed. A very moving read.

THE SUPREME COURT

Don't think the left has gone off the edge yet? John Hawkins at Right Wing News has a DU thread you really ought to see, The DU Thread Of The Day: I Shall P*ss On The Grave Of William Rehnquist. Absolutely beyond words...

MOTHER MOONBAT

There is no better way to illustrate the mental illness and utter depravity of those on the left fringe, then to let them speak for themselves. Will Franklin of WILLisms presents: Cindy Sheehan, on America. It is a must have catalogue of Sheehan's most kooky quotes - bookmark and share!

CONGRESSWOMAN'S HUBBY PLEADS GUILTY

John Ruberry at Marathon Pundit was concerned that this story was getting lost, so I'll do what I can to put the word out. For those of us in the Chicago area, the words "Rep. Jan Schakowsky" are enough to make our skin crawl and our stomachs queasy. For John, it must be unbearable because, well, that particular howling moonbat is his Congresscritter! Yikes! Anyway, it seems her hubby has had some problems with the law, and John has the poop: Congresswoman Schakowsky's Husband Pleads Guilty to Fraud.

FUNNY BUSINESS

Buckley F. Williams at The Nose on Your Face presents evidence that the roots of the BFEE (Bush Family Evil Empire) go back much farther than anyone on the left had dared to dream with Bush Family Disasters Throughout History.

Of course, Liberal Larry of BlameBush! is all too happy to chronicle the latest Bush outrage with Bush Drinks Blood from Hurricane Victim's Skull.

John at WuzzaDem has done it again: The "Disaster Porn" Stars of Cable News (Part I) and (Part II). This guy gets funnier all the time!

Right Wing Duck has some Lessons from Katrina for us all at IMAO.

Ace of Spades presents Sean Penn's Rescue Attempt as Retarded as Sam I Am featuring "Top Ten Rescuers in Sean Penn's Dingy of Celebrity Mercy."

The Therapist has a toe-tappin' re-write of an old Johnny Horton classic: The Looting of New Orleans.

If you're still in the mood to sing after that, why not check out this Open Letter to Jane and Al from the Fat Farm not by Michael Moore at Huffington's Toast? "Hello, Franken. Hello, Fonda..."

Poor Mother Sheehan: Flood Coverage Takes Devastating Toll on Sheehan Campaign. Sharp as a Marble has the details. Gee, maybe she ought to sue somebody!

I sure hope some clever conservative came up with this website as a joke, otherwise... well, see for yourself: George W Bush is the AntiChrist. [h/t Ace of Spades.]

Steve H. at Hog on Ice is convinced, Bush Is Satan!

UPDATE 9/8: Rob B. at File It Under... has some great ideas for bumber stickers for left-wing kooks: Beware of the (Moon)Bat Mobile.

CARNIVALS

Carnival of Crazy V - A Whirlwind of Crazy at File It Under...

Carnival of Classiness at WILLisms.

The 155th Carnival of the Vanities at sortapundit.

NOTE: Due to technical problems, Rick Moran's Carnival of the Clueless at Right Wing Nut House, has been cancelled for this week.

UPDATE 9/8: The Carnival of Comedy is now being served at Rapid Politics Dot Com.

CONTESTS

The weekly photo caption contest is up at WILLisms.

Rodney Dill is always running a caption contest at Outside the Beltway.

That should be enough for now. Y'all come back now, ya hear?

Prayer Request

I just received an e-mail from my Right Place co-blogger Stephen Johnson. He told me that his mother has been hospitalized. He didn't provide any details, but I thought it might be appropriate to ask all of our readers to pray for her and for Stephen and the rest of his family in what must be a very stressful time.

Understandably, he will not be heard from here very much for at least the next few days.

Thank you and God bless you all.

******************************

UPDATE 9/6: Good news!

Stephen stopped by and left this note in the comments section:

Thanks. Mom is OK - the shortness of breath that hospitalized her was due to low hemoglobin, not something more serious as I had at first feared. She's getting a blood transfusion now, and should be released in a couple of days.

Glad to hear it, Stephen!

Everyone else, please keep her in your prayers for awhile longer, just to be safe. God bless!

Cindy Sheehan Files Suit Against God; President Bush, Israel Named as "Co-Conspirators"

A spokesperson for "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan revealed today that a multi-billion dollar lawsuit had been filed in Celestial Court against Almighty God Himself in response to the recent hurricane and resulting devastation, which "only served to knock coverage of her crusade against the President off the front page and the prime-time network news."

"The spirit of the late Johnnie Cochran will be handling her case, pro bono," said Sheehan spokeswoman, Ima Hauer, at an impromptu and sparsely attended press conference in a ditch outside President Bush's recently vacated ranch near Crawford, Texas. "We felt compelled to file this suit due to the blatantly obvious attempt to deny Mrs. Sheehan her Constitutional Right to non-stop front and center press coverage for the remainder of her life, a Right she earned due to the pre-meditated murder of her son by President George W. Bush, who sent him to die in a meaningless war for oil."

"We believe that this 'hurricane' came at an awfully convenient time for the President, and that fact, in and of itself, constitutes absolute proof of a conspiracy to knock coverage of Mrs. Sheehan's plight from the front page!" Decried a defiant Johnnie Cochran through well-known medium Oda Mae Brown, "Since God is the only Entity capable of creating such a distraction, we intend to sue His golden sandals off for this outrage! The President has openly admitted to his belief in God and stated that he regularly prays to Him. It is this open channel of communication which, we contend, the President exploited to ask God for this 'favor' and we will prove this before the court and the entire Universe!"

An anonymous friend of Sheehan, wishing only to be referred to as "The Duke" added, "She is also suing the State of Israel because, as everyone knows, no plot this large could ever move forward without the aid of the Jews! Besides, don't you think it was peculiar that there were so few Jewish people in the Gulf Coast area when the storm hit? We contend that they were warned to leave ahead of time." When a reporter pointed out that everyone had been warned ahead of time that the storm was coming, "The Duke" abruptly walked away, mumbling to himself.

The response from Heaven was swift, "We are very concerned about this right now and are taking it very seriously," said St. Peter to a room full of reporters through an apparition on a Vatican wall. "Our biggest worry is finding competent representation. Good defense lawyers are quite difficult to come by up here." After a momentary pause, St. Peter laughed, "I always wanted to tell that joke! No seriously, Mrs. Sheehan is a complete loon and you can tell her that I just spoke with her son. He said that she should just shut up and go home before she embarrasses herself and her family any further or does any more damage to his good name. Thank you."

Sean To The Rescue!

Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks:

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

Well, it's the thought that counts. ;-)

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

Over the last couple of days, I've heard numerous complaints from leftist activists about the insensitivity of President Bush to the problems of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. However, this bit of information about the evacuation order that was issued last Sunday by Mayor Nagin is news to me:

The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

(Emphasis mine)

One wonders what might have happened if Nagin had kept with tradition and made the order voluntary.

Time's Up!

Cindy Sheehan's 15 minutes of fame are now officially up:

One of the few good things about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is that it has managed to shift media attention away from the increasingly tiresome protest organized around Cindy Sheehan.

Now that President Bush has decamped from Crawford, Texas, where Sheehan had staged her peace "vigil," the activist herself has moved on. While thousands of volunteers head south to try to do some good for their fellow man, Sheehan will go "on tour." Among her stops will be Brunswick, Maine, at the Brunswick Naval Air Station where she is scheduled to protest an upcoming appearance of the Blue Angels, the Navy's precision flying team.

Bruce Gagnon, an organizer of Veterans for Peace, says it is fitting for Sheehan to come to Brunswick to "stop the worship of the gods of war." And just when you think perhaps the world has come to its senses . . .

As expected, the Katrina aftermath and the upcoming senate hearings for John Roberts have pushed Sheehan off the Moveon.org/Michael Moore radar screen. She should soon find out how much her "friends" value her now that she's no longer in the spotlight.

I sincerely hope that this troubled woman will find peace in her life. Perhaps, absent distraction by the media, the healing process can begin.

God Bless America.

UPDATE: I just ran across this post in the comments section, but I believe it warrants being re-posted here on the main page for all to see:

Thank you for your recommendation. I was looking for some FEMA information for families and stumbled across the main blog--don't know now where that was.

I am the communications coordinator for Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge. You just can't imagine what is going on here. While we have a very good disaster plan, we never, ever could have imagined the devastation that Katrina has caused. Hour by hour, the situation is changing and becoming more horrific by the minute.

Please know, Catholic Charities will be here for the long haul. We're in the trenches now, but we'll be here for the long haul after everyone else is gone. Charities in Oklahoma City were providing services 5 years after the bombing. New England Charities are still assisting those families. I can see us still delivering services for years and years.

Donations of cash are needed NOW! We don't need food, water, clothes, and we can't house or manage volunteers right now. That all might come later. So think about us in next Spring or in 2 years. Help will still be needed. Thank you.

This is such a huge responsibility. Lives are literally in our hands right now. Just heard of 300 Vietnamese trapped in a Catholic Church in New Orleans. Please pray they are rescued.

Anyway, thank you for hearing me out. I'm very tired, very stressed and very worried that I'm not up to the job God has called me to do.

Keep us in your prayers.

Carol

Hypocrite, Thy Name is...

...Robert Kennedy:

Now we are all learning what it’s like to reap the whirlwind of fossil fuel dependence which Barbour and his cronies have encouraged. Our destructive addiction has given us a catastrophic war in the Middle East and--now--Katrina is giving our nation a glimpse of the climate chaos we are bequeathing our children.

You would think from the above passage that Sir Robert would be in favor of alternatives to fossil fuels, like wind power. You would be right - as long as it isn't in his backyard:

Similar complaints, coming from prominent environmentalists like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have stalled installation of the nation's first off-shore wind farm, proposed for the waters of Nantucket Sound off Cape Cod. And they have forced the Long Island Power Authority to scrap its plan for wind turbines off the eastern tip of Long Island. But the utility has now proposed putting up to 50 turbines, each 488 feet high, off Long Island's south shore between Fire Island and Jones Beach, two immensely popular summer resort areas.

Mr. Kennedy, for one, said he found "zero" irony in the fact that he had devoted himself to environmental advocacy and yet opposed the wind project on Cape Cod, his Kennedy grandparents' summer home.

"There are appropriate places for everything," he said in a telephone interview. "You would not want a wind farm in Yosemite, and you wouldn't want one in Central Park."

The problem is that there don't seem to be any appropriate places to put the wind farms. Just ask Vincent Collins:

Vincent Collins, a lawyer from nearby Morgantown, has been vacationing in this scenic area for 35 years. A few years ago, he bought a 1.2-acre lot near here and planned to build a house on it. But once he saw the windmills, and learned of plans for more, he scrapped that dream.

... Charles Komanoff, a longtime economic consultant to environmental groups, said the opposition by "well-heeled environmentalists," stoked the preconception that they were more concerned about their own backyards than about the common good.

"They want to have it all and they won't brook any trade-off, especially a trade-off that sacrifices their own comfort," said Mr. Komanoff, who is based in New York.

Bottom line: Liberals like Kennedy are really good at offering criticism, but they never offer any real solutions to problems. In this case, things are even worse - liberal environmentalists are blocking a proposed solution.

Finally, I can't let this gem by Kennedy go by unchallenged:

In 1998, Republican icon Pat Robertson warned that hurricanes were likely to hit communities that offended God. Perhaps it was Barbour’s memo that caused Katrina, at the last moment, to spare New Orleans and save its worst flailings for the Mississippi coast.

New Orleans, it turns out, wasn't spared. But I'm sure that payback against Barbour in the media means more to Kennedy than the lives of the people who were effected by Katrina.

Here's an Idea...

On my way home today, I noticed that a few of the houses I passed were flying their flags again - not many, but a few. As soon as I got home, I put mine out as well.

Maybe it's nothing, but it just felt right - a small gesture of solidarity for our fellow Americans who have been so terribly impacted by this horrific hurricane and its brutal aftermath.

So what do you say, folks? Will you please join me in flying your flags?
