Explain The French. Please.

I'm a simple guy. (Go ahead, throw out those obvious lines. I can take it.) Someone more ... nuanced, perhaps, is going to have to explain the French to me. Perhaps somebody tall, with terrific hair, from Massachusetts. In particular, I'm perplexed by the protests in France over a law that would make it more likely for young workers to be hired at the expense of some job security for the first two years.

PARIS - More than 1 million people poured into the streets across France and strikers disrupted air, rail and bus travel Tuesday — even shutting down the Eiffel Tower — in the largest nationwide protest over a youth labor law.

Scattered violence erupted in Paris, and riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse several thousand youths who pelted them with stones and bottles after an otherwise peaceful march. More than 240 people were arrested.

Unions and the leftist opposition joined in solidarity with the angry students for the one-day strike, increasing the pressure on Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to withdraw the measure that makes it easier to fire young workers.

Well, yes, it does make it easier to fire young workers, but you can only be fired from a job after you've been hired. Otherwise you're just a ne'er-do-well, a slacker.

Students and labor unions say the labor law will erode France's cherished workplace protections. Set to take effect next month, it would let companies fire employees under 26 without reason in the first two years on the job.

[...]

Villepin says the greater flexibility will encourage companies to hire young workers, who face a 22 percent unemployment rate — the highest in Western Europe. But as protests have grown, his government — and his chances of running for president next year — have appeared increasingly fragile.

Now, obviously, the potential exists for French companies to abuse these "disposable" workers. But part of France's high structural unemployment and anemic economic growth is the difficulty that companies have in firing workers. As a result the companies are justifiably wary about taking on a young worker with no track record. At the very least, even if the employer does abuse the privilege and fire workers without cause, that worker will now actually have a work track record when he or she seeks a second job.

"We are here for our children. We are very worried about what will happen to them," said Philippe Decrulle, an Air France flight attendant at the Paris protest. "My son is 23, and he has no job. That is normal in France."

As I said, explain the French. Please.

Aside: Congratulations on 100k, Mr. Right. I'm glad I could be a part of it. Let's go get 200k!

100K and Counting!

With everything else that has happened this past week, I missed blogging about an important milestone...

At 5:47am CST on March 23, 2006, this blog welcomed visitor number 100,000. Our mystery guest hails from nearby Sandwich, IL and like many others the past couple weeks, our honored guest dropped by to take a peek at our Bush = Hitler post, which certainly goes down as one of our most popular posts to date!

I would like to thank visitor #100,000, as well as all who came before and after! The next milestone is way up the road at 250K. I wonder how long it'll take us to get there?

Thank you all for visiting the Right Place!

Explaining My Absence...

For any of you who may be wondering where I've wandered off to, I just wanted to let you know that I am currently dealing with a situation regarding the health of my father, which has been keeping my blogging time (both reading and posting) at next to none since Sunday evening.

My wife and I were expecting to go to dinner with my dad that evening, instead we ended up spending many hours in the emergency room while they ran tests and then finally admitted him for further testing and observation, after which we had to take care of several things at his apartment before we could return home and do a number of necessary small chores before going to bed in the wee small hours. The last several days have been stressful, but hopeful, and most of my spare time has been spent on various chores and visits.

I don't want to go into too much detail, except to say that at this time, he is improving primarily with the help of medication, and it is hoped that he can be released soon and return to a fairly normal life. The only real hurdle remaining at the moment is a procedure they are performing tomorrow while I am stuck at work worrying and trying to get through what promises to be a longer than usual 10 hour work day.

If all goes well, I will return soon. If not, it may be awhile. I will try to keep up with the captions contest if nothing else, but I cannot promise anything at this time. Thank you for your understanding and God bless.

-Mr. Right-

******************************

UPDATE 3/27:

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the many well-wishes and prayers. It means a lot, thank you all very much.

Next, I would like to let you all know that my father is home from the hospital and doing well. He was released Saturday after they cancelled the procedure they had set for Thursday. With any luck, he should continue to improve with regular nursing visits, check-ups and medication.

Finally, I am almost done judging the overdue photo caption contest and will be posting it soon!

All the best,
Mr. Right

Is John Howard To Blame?

A very powerful cyclone hit Australia in the Queensland province, making landfall at category 5.

CAIRNS, Australia - Metal roofs littered streets, wooden houses lay in splinters and banana plantations were stripped bare after the most powerful cyclone to hit Australia in three decades lashed the country's eastern coast Monday.

Amazingly, the storm caused no reported fatalities, and only 30 people suffered minor injuries. But the damage from Cyclone Larry, a Category 5 storm with winds up to 180 mph, was expected to run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Hardest hit was Innisfail, a farming city of 8,500 people 60 miles south of the tourist city of Cairns in northeastern Queensland state. By Tuesday the storm was well inland and downgraded to a severe low pressure system.

"It looks like an atomic bomb hit the place," Innisfail mayor Neil Clarke told Australian television. "It is severe damage. This is more than a local disaster, this is a national disaster."

Prime Minister John Howard on Tuesday pledged his administration would help shattered communities rebuild.

"The federal government will give what is needed to get these communities back on their feet," Howard said in a radio interview. "We just need a day or two to make a proper assessment of how the money can best be spent."

I blame Prime Minister Howard. He should have known this could happen. What is he talking about, "a day or two to make a proper assessment?" Get the federal troops in there and take care of the people! He should have had the help there within minutes! Seconds, even! These Aussies are suffering, I tell you, and a caring PM wouldn't just be spouting platitudes, he'd be doing something.

It's racism, that's what it is. Or classism. It's some kind of 'ism.' He just doesn't care about those who are different from him.

Howard lied, and ... and ... and nobody died! Wait a minute, why didn't anyone die?

The casualty toll was so low because people left town or went to shelters after authorities posted warnings. Residents and officials were mindful of the damage Hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans and Mississippi last August, said Ben Creagh, a spokesman for Queensland state Department of Emergency Services.

You mean an incredibly powerful storm was on it's way and the people actually left the area in response to warnings? Go figure.

Results of New In-Depth Study Revealed: Bush May Actually Be Hitler!

After careful research into the claims of many leftists that President George W. Bush is, in fact, a carbon copy of infamous German dictator Adolf Hitler, The Right Place was more than a bit disturbed by the many eerie similarities we were able to uncover between the two world leaders.

Seeing as how George W. Bush was born into the world on July 6, 1946, a little over a year after the death of Adolf Hitler on April 30, 1945, we must agree it is quite possible that he is, in fact, the very reincarnation of history's greatest monster!

Consider the evidence:

HITLER...

Was a white male.

BUSH...

Is a white male.

HITLER...

Formed an alliance with Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

BUSH...

Ditto.

HITLER...

Considered the French adversarial and obnoxious.

BUSH...

Same here.

HITLER...

Had an aversion to the Poles.

BUSH...

Has an aversion to polls.

HITLER...

One of history's most infamous bachelors.

BUSH...

Earned a bachelor's degree in history.

HITLER...

Had a funny little trademark mustache.

BUSH...

Has often sported a funny little "milk mustache".

HITLER...

Known as Der Führer amongst the Germans.

BUSH...

Known to cause a furor amongst liberals.

HITLER...

Had a FEMALE companion named Eva Braun. ("Braun" is German for "Brown".)

BUSH...

Had a FEMA Director named Michael "Brown".

HITLER...

His failure to learn from Napoleon's ill-fated Russian campaign cost Germany dearly in World War II.

BUSH...

His failure to return Napoleon Dynamite to Blockbuster Video on time cost him dearly in additional rental fees.

HITLER...

Once portrayed in a play within a movie by a character called L.S.D., who was played by actor Dick Shawn.

BUSH...

Once offered LSD while attending a play in college by two guys named Dick and Shawn.

HITLER...

Became infamous for the "Night of the Long Knives".

BUSH...

Became infamous for the "Night of the Long Island Iced Teas".

HITLER...

Sent millions to live and die in slavery and terrible squalor in concentration camps.

BUSH...

Played a game of concentration while at summer camp.

HITLER...

Unsuccessful in his attempts to conquer the English.

BUSH...

Unsuccessful in his attempts to conquer the English language.

HITLER...

Created the notorious SS and Gestapo.

BUSH...

Once filled up his Monte Carlo SS at a Gas Stop in Ohio.

HITLER...

During his reign of madness, he was responsible for the deaths of untold millions of innocent people.

BUSH...

During drinking binges in his youth, he was responsible for the deaths of untold millions of brain cells.

HITLER...

Hated the Jews.

BUSH...

Not all that fond of Barbra Streisand.

Coincidence? Perhaps, but perhaps not. In the end, you must decide for yourself...

    Gone but not forgotten?

  • Peter Halabu (MI)

    Catholicism Redux

  • Peter was a semi-regular in our caption contests for awhile who should have been inducted in the last round. Although his blog seems to have gone dormant, I am going to correct my clumsy oversight, welcome him to the club, and list him along with the others who have vanished from the blogosphere in the hopes they may someday return...

    More to come...

As always, there are a number of other folks who I am keeping an eye on for possible inclusion in the next round of inductions. If you are a frequent visitor here, and have a blog of your own, let me know of your presence via comments, e-mails and, of course, links, and you can join, too!

In the meantime, if you have us on your blogroll, but do not appear on ours, just let me know and I will fix that!

    OUR PREVIOUS INDUCTEES...

    Right Place Contributors

  • Anna (OH)

A Rose by Any Other Name

    Warm 'n Fuzzy Conserva-Puppies

    The Right Place

  • Anna was one of our earliest regulars who began a blog of her own that is, quite simply, awesome! I was very proud to have her join us here shortly after she helped make our "Blogoweeniversary" Party a real success. Her finest moment among many wonderful contributions was her call for help for milblogger Grey Eagle, which resulted in a blogstorm that helped a medic on the frontlines in Iraq find the help she needed to shield her blog, a tribute to fallen soldiers, from some vicious trolls and hackers. Way to go, Anna!

  • Giacomo [aka T.M. Ergin] (NH)

    Joust the Facts

    The Right Place

  • Dr. Ergin was a frequent visitor and commenter here who also contributed greatly to the success of our "Blogoweeniversary" Party last year. His own blog had long been a regular stop for me, but he seemed to be criminally under-evolved on the TTLB Ecosystem! I was very humbled when he agreed to join us here, where I hope he has garnered some more exposure for his fine work both there and here! I was pleased to see Joust the Facts among the Weblog Awards Finalists this past year, giving it some well-deserved notoriety! Congratulations again, T.M.!

  • Lorie is one of the finest bloggers in the business and a true inspiration. It was the work of her and her fellow bloggers at PoliPundit that first got me interested in blogging. • Pat Curley (AZ)

    Brainster's Blog

    Lifelike Pundits

    Silver Age Comics

  • Pat Curley is easily the nicest guy on the Internet and one of the finest bloggers out there. He was the very first person ever to blogroll me and helped get me my big break when he noticed my post on congressional voting records that I had put weeks of research into, but had no idea how to promote. Pat spread the word for me and taught me the value of a little self-promotion now and then. He has linked frequently and often helps out other new bloggers that catch his eye just as he helped me! He has a must read blog where he posts frequent exclusives that should not be missed! Pat also participated in our "Blogoweeniversary" Party. Thanks for everything, Pat!

  • Rodney Dill

    Outside the Beltway

  • Rodney helped put my weekly photo caption contests on the map with his regular participation and with a link in the prestigious OTB Caption Jam each Saturday. He also took part in the "Blogoweeniversary" Party and he most recently designed a couple of very nice linking buttons for our captions players, too! Thanks, Hood!
