ANOTHER RIGHT PLACE EXCLUSIVE: College Journalism Exam with Answer Key!

The Right Place has managed to obtain a faculty only answer-keyed copy of a final examination that is regularly administered to the students in the prestigious journalism program at a major American university! The contents of this exam may shock and horrify you! Then again, they may go a long way towards explaining the sad state of journalism in this country these days...

ADVANCED JOURNALISM
FINAL EXAM

1. Your main job as a member of the news media in good standing is to...

A) Report the news fairly and accurately, with an emphasis on independently confirmed facts from multiple reliable sources and reasonable objectivity.

B) Destroy the evil Republican Party and everything it stands for, as well as anyone who would dare to support it!!!

C) Report innuendo and rumor as fact and rush to air or print anything "juicy" enough without checking into it in order to be first and maximize the glory for yourself and the organization that you work for.

D) Help liberal Democrats regain power so that things in this country can get back to being the way they should be.

E) All of the above.

F) B, C and D only.

CORRECT ANSWER: F

2. You receive word of a plane crash and find out your mobile unit is just minutes away from the airport where the plane was due to land shortly. Word of the plane crash is just now going out over the air, and the names of victims have not yet been released pending notification of families...

A) You proceed to the airport, set up in an area away from any people who may be coming there to pick up loved ones who will never arrive and begin reporting the story in a dignified manner, using only confirmed facts and officially released statements.

B) You proceed to the airport and begin to contact airline and government officials, seeking to find out the facts as officially known and respecting the wishes of what they wish to be kept out of the public eye for the time being while they attempt to notify the families.

C) You proceed to the airport and stake it out, hounding anyone who approaches that may be there to meet the plane that crashed, break the news to them with the camera and microphone on, shoving both in their face and asking them for their reaction to the news (which they just this second heard from you) that their loved ones are likely dead.

CORRECT ANSWER: C

3. You are a war correspondent sent to cover the War in Iraq...

A) You get out and see the country for yourself, as best and safely as possible, talking to as many every day Iraqis, Iraqi officials, and U.S. and allied military personnel as you can. You try to see how the country really is, how things have changed since the U.S. invaded, whether people feel the situation is improving, what American troops have been doing for the people of Iraq and attempt to balance that against the continued violence and unrest that may still exist in certain areas and try to convey an honest picture of the current situation as it is, good and bad, back to the American people and the world at large.

B) You sit on your derriere in the relative safety of your luxury hotel, protected by the U.S. military, and report what you can cull from "sources" about all the explosions, killings, political unrest and, most important of all, American deaths, ignoring anything else, which, after all, is not really news. Ooooh! And beau-coup bonus points for stories about American "atrocities"! And don't forget to obtain file footage of some burning cars! It is always good to have as much burning car footage as you can get!

CORRECT ANSWER: B

4. The economy is on an upswing with massive growth, relatively low unemployment, the lowest interest rates in a generation, low taxes and almost no inflation. An election is approaching and the incumbent Republican President is running for a second term...

A) You honestly and accurately report the good economic news to the public.

B) You try to report on other, much more juicy things and ignore the good economic news. Good news is so boring anyway!

C) Check with your friends at the DNC for the latest talking points to see how you can make some nice sour lemons out of this icky sweet lemonade and hurl them at the Republican dufus! Be sure to remember that growth can be "sluggish", various areas of "bad news" may be found in a day or two of rough trading on Wall Street, energy prices could be high, the poor are always suffering somewhere, left out of the President's supposed "strong economy" and you can always find some "economist" to predict that the next Great Depression is just around the corner due to the President's "ill-advised" tax cuts "for the rich"! Go get, him, tiger!

CORRECT ANSWER: C

5. You receive a tip from a highly reliable source that a high-ranking Democrat office-holder is involved in a potentially blockbuster scandal. You...

A) Run with the story without any further confirmation.

B) Dig deeper and find at least one corroborating source or documentary evidence that can be properly vetted that confirms the story and only then run with it.

C) Ignore it completely. Democrats are the good guys and we can't afford to lose any members of the "team," no matter how corrupt they may be!

CORRECT ANSWER: C

6. Several local Democrat officials are arrested and charged with voter fraud on a massive scale, and the story is becoming public knowledge thanks to those bastard conservative retards on the blogs and talk radio...

A) You completely ignore the story because no one but a handful of right wing wackos pay attention to those sources anyway and who cares what they think!

B) You reluctantly run the story with all the pertinent facts, just as you would if it were a scum-sucking Rethuglican!

C) You print the story in a microscopic-sized two paragraph blurb on page E19 next to the cookie recipes with a non-attention grabbing headline such as "Charges Filed in Fraud Case," making certain never to mention the party affiliation of any of the defendants anywhere in the article.

CORRECT ANSWER: C

The following question has two parts:

7a. A prominent Republican donor is arrested and charged with improprieties involving campaign contributions...

A) You print the story in a microscopic-sized two paragraph blurb on page E19 next to the cookie recipes with a non-attention grabbing headline such as "Charges Filed in Illegal Campaign Financing Case," making certain never to mention the party affiliation of the defendant or any of the people he is alleged to have donated to anywhere in the article.

B) Run a fair, balanced story about the man's alleged activities, remembering the principle that he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and is entitled to a fair trial before judgment is passed on him and that those he allegedly donated money to may not have been involved in any illegal activity, especially if they are not charged with anything.

C) Holler, "STOP THE PRESSES!!!" at the top of your lungs! Get a block headline ready for the front page --- above the fold --- reading, "Republican Bag Man Caught Funneling Illegal Contributions to Prominent Party Bigwigs!" Mention as many Republicans by name (the more prominent the better) as you can in the article, taking special care to trumpet their party affiliation with each and every mention! Cast the net as wide as possible, naming everyone even rumored by anyone, anywhere to maybe have been involved and slamming the bastards as the pathetic crooks and liars we know them ALL to be!

CORRECT ANSWER: C

7b. Your story about the prominent Republican donor takes an unexpected twist, as suddenly numerous Democrats are implicated as having also taken money from said donor...

A) Give the Democrats the same treatment you just gave the Republicans, after all, it is only fair!

B) Back off the story and let it cool down, lest it take an ugly turn and end up having unintended consequences.

C) F**k it! Continue to frame the whole thing as a Republican scandal, ignore any and all Democrat names that pop up and refuse to report them. If pushed by right wing a**holes, claim that any attempt to try to add Democrat names to the scandal is only a desperate attempt to spin their way out of what is the "Mother of all Republican Scandals," and that it starts and ends with their side of the aisle!

CORRECT ANSWER: C

8. About one month from a Presidential Election, you suddenly receive documents from a highly dubious source (who may have a major political axe to grind) that purport to provide proof of a story that may portray the incumbent President in a negative light and affect the outcome of the coming election. No one has been able to nail down this story, despite their best efforts, for over five years. The documents are purportedly signed by someone who has been dead for 2 decades, and do not adhere to a form consistent with other documents known to have been genuinely produced by the same individual. Your document experts are unable to positively confirm the authenticity of the documents, which are not originals but reproductions, many generations removed from the originals and suspiciously look more like they were produced using modern computer equipment than with a 1970's era typewriter. Your source says that he does not possess the originals. One of your document experts says the signature on ONE of the documents MAY be authentic, but he cannot vouch for any other part of that document or the remaining ones. You truly believe in your story and want it to be true...

A) You reluctantly drop the story rather than risk using what may be false documents, which would leave you looking foolish and unethical and possibly destroy your career and leave you with a feckless story with no supporting documentation.

B) You put the story on hold and contact more document experts in an effort to further vet the questionable material and show the documents to people connected to the individual who signed them (such as his personal secretary, other close associates, or family members) who may be in a position to help bolster or debunk them.

C) You run with the story anyway because the incumbent President is f***ing Republican scum and you want to do all the damage to him you possibly can and are on a deadline to break the story in conjunction with a related DNC campaign stunt, and besides, who's going to know if they're fake? Some anonymous boobs on the Internet in their pajamas? Whose going to listen to them??? Ha! Besides, even if they get you fired, you'll still be seen as a hero by your colleagues who will shower you with awards and you can make a mint selling a book about the vast right wing conspiracy to destroy you and how you were right all along and never have to work again anyhow!

CORRECT ANSWER: C

    Lucky Dawg News

    Al-Zawahiri Speaks ...

... and he sounds a lot like Cindy Sheehan. Today, via Al Jazeera (no surprise there), OBL's second in command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri points to planned US troop reductions in Iraq as a victory for Islam.

Al-Zawahri, wearing a white turban and gray robe and seated next to an automatic rifle, waved his finger for emphasis as he spoke in the two-minute excerpt aired by Al-Jazeera. "I congratulate (the Islamic nation) for the victory of Islam in Iraq," he said.

    More Al-Zawahiri:

"Regarding your withdrawal timetable ... you have to admit, Bush, that you have been defeated in Iraq and are being defeated in Afghanistan and will be defeated in Palestine," he said, speaking calmly but forcefully.

Who else does he sound like? Let's see if we can recall some quotes (all italics mine).

Rep. John Murtha: "Once you lose the hearts and minds in a guerrilla war, you lose the war," said Murtha, D-Pa., in Boston to attend a Democratic fund-raiser. "You can't win this militarily now."

Rep. Nancy Pelosi: "I will be supporting the Murtha resolution," she said, adding that Congress needs to conduct a "serious debate" about withdrawing U.S. troops.
DNC Chairman Howard Dean: "We need to be out of there and take the targets off our troops back." Dean recalled that the strategy to stay the course in Vietnam cost thousands more lives to be lost.
"I wish the president had paid more attention to the history of Iraq before we had gotten in there," Dean said. "The idea that we're going to win this war is just plain wrong."
Sen. John Kerry, firmly astride the fence: "The way forward in Iraq is not to pull out precipitously or merely promise to stay 'as long as it takes,' " Kerry said during an address at Georgetown University. "We must instead simultaneously pursue both a political settlement and the withdrawal of American combat forces."
Sen. Ted Kennedy, presciently a year ago: "Second, for democracy to take root, the Iraqis need a clear signal that America has a clear exit strategy. The President should say immediately that America intends no long-term presence.
Third, once the elections are behind us, we need to disengage military, and negotiate a withdrawal. At least 12,000 American troops and probably more should leave immediately to send a signal about our intention. America's goal should be to complete the drawdown as early as possible in 2006."

    Al-Zawahiri would be pleased.

UPDATE: Via the indispensible Ace of Spades, the other side begs to differ with Al-Zawahiri's assessment of the situation.

[Iraq's National Security Adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie] went on to say that the Iraqi security forces had reached a critical mass and would soon be able to deal with the insurgents. He said army, police and border guards now numbered approximately 250,000.
"They have reached a very good level in terms of their training and equipment and their readiness to combat terrorism," Mr Rubaie said.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Moonbats

It has come to our attention here at The Right Place that many people foolishly purchased moonbats as pets for themselves or their children during this holiday season. While the appeal of keeping these hideously ugly, ill-tempered, high-pitched screeching wonders of nature as housepets truly eludes us, we hope to perform a public service by presenting these helpful tips for caring for your new pet, courtesy of the world's foremost moonbat expert, Dr. Wayne Bruce:

    The Responsible Pet Owner

The first, most important thing for all responsible moonbat owners to do is to have their pets spayed or neutered immediately to help control the moonbat population. This is especially important during election cycles, as they tend to go into heat at such times. Attempts to increase their numbers can be loud, obnoxious and quite dangerous to civilized societies. Remember, the world has more than enough moonbats already, so be responsible and help us to keep their numbers in check.

A Brief History of the Moonbat in the Wild

The common moonbat, or vespertilio lunaris*, was first catalogued as a species during the 1960s, when it was found primarily in large, colorful, and quite smelly colonies on or near college campuses across the United States. Sometimes referred to as "Hippies", they also frequently migrated in large numbers to various fields and stadiums, usually drawn by the lure of psychedelic rock music or very bad folk singing and the smell of burning rope. Though their numbers have dwindled somewhat since then, they are, unfortunately for society, not yet ready for the endangered species list. Over the years, they have shifted from nesting inside college dorms to faculty lounges and the studios of many mass media outlets with alarming ease. Many have even found their way into government offices, where they can be especially dangerous and hard to get rid of! Attempts to control the moonbat population have met with only moderate success, but many moonbats will surprisingly enough, with time, evolve into something resembling a human being. Unfortunately, though, many do not manage this metamorphosis, and these are what we sometimes call "Deaniacs", "Kossacks", "DUmmies", or more simply, "Fruitcakes".

    The Moonbat as a Housepet

While keeping moonbats as pets is never recommended due to their volatile tempers and generally sociopathic behavior, some people have found them so fascinating as to want to while away the hours watching their wild, unpredictably goofy antics up close. Since we can not prevent people from making the terrible mistake of bringing a moonbat into the home, and since some human children occasionally devolve into moonbats while away at college after being bitten by a particularly rabid one, we offer this guide as a public service to help you in dealing properly with your new pet.

    Housing Your Moonbat

Being cold-blooded and not very bright by nature, the captive moonbat will typically prefer to dwell somewhere dark, cool and damp, such as a dimly lit basement or attic, a filthy bedroom, or a room above the family garage. The faint odor of incense or scented candles is often detectable near a moonbat's nest, and they will usually horde such things. It is highly recommended that a responsible owner encourage the regular use of such objects to drown out the stench usually associated with the creatures, whose hygiene habits can best be described as deplorable!

Provide your moonbat with plenty of aluminum foil with which to line his nest and encase his cranium, as this will ease his irrational fear of Karl Rove's "mind-ray". He may occasionally playfully attempt to wrap the heads of other family members in tinfoil as well. This behavior, though seemingly odd, is quite harmless and a sign of great affection, so play along once in awhile to make your moonbat feel loved and accepted.

Your moonbat will need access to the Internet so he can vent his pent-up anger and feed his insatiable need for outrageous conspiracy theories and anti-Bush rhetoric, so be certain to provide him with a computer and a modem connection. He will happily spend hour after hour at such mind-boggling, psychotic websites as Democratic Underground, Daily Kos, The Huffington Post, Indymedia, MoveOn.org, Eschaton, Oliver Willis and Pandagon, blaming President Bush for everything from tsunamis to global warming on Mars. It is this very behavior that makes moonbats so entertaining and has caused such an explosion in their popularity as housepets --- but be warned, if left unchecked, your moonbat can easily become "net addicted" and spend every waking moment on the computer, trolling Republican-friendly websites and calling everyone he finds a Nazi. Some have even taken to hacking websites of people they don't find agreeable and calling milbloggers baby-killers. If your moonbat begins to demonstrate this sort of ultra-aggressive behavior, his computer privileges must be revoked and, as difficult as it may be, it would probably be best for everybody if he were humanely put down.

    Moonbat Diets

Many moonbats are herbivores, reacting angrily at the sight of meat, fish or dairy products. They can exist happily on granola, fresh fruits and vegetables, twigs, tofu, diet soda, Evian and yogurt. For other moonbats, you may need to provide an extensive array of snack foods such as Hostess snack cakes or anything ending in -itos! They also frequently enjoy Triple Mocha Latte Cappuccinos from Starbucks, but these can be rather expensive. Often, moonbats also liberally use tobacco products and may smoke funny little herbs that resemble oregano. It is recommended, however, that you discourage this last behavior, as it leads to binge snacking and nonsensical babbling --- that is to say, more than usual. Many also crave copious amounts of alcohol, but this is also considered dangerous and should not be permitted.

The most important staple of any moonbat's diet, though, is Kool-Aid --- and lots of it! Lacking self-control, they will usually drink all the Kool-Aid they can find, so it is wise to ration it to keep them from overdosing. A pitcher or two a day should suffice, and alternating flavors for the sake of variety is always a nice gesture.

    Mating Rituals

The unfixed moonbat will typically try to reproduce when in heat, mostly during election cycles, and often by attempting to bite, and thereby infect, healthy human beings. They may also attempt to obtain a member of the opposite sex for brainwashing and/or breeding purposes, often bathing themselves liberally in Patchouli oil in a misguided attempt to attract a mate. They are rarely successful at the second method, thankfully, as they usually refuse to bathe, brush their teeth, shave any part of their anatomy, or get a haircut. The bite of a rabid moonbat in heat, while rarely fatal, can manage to infect the weak-minded and it is for this reason that we ask you to be responsible and spay or neuter your moonbat immediately!

The mating call of the lovesick moonbat is easily recognizable, as it is typically characterized by such phrases as, "No blood for oil"; "Bush lied, kids died"; "We support our troops... when they shoot their officers"; "Selected not elected"; "Bush is a Nazi"; and "Make love, not war". They will sometimes paint these phrases, rife with misspellings and images of swastikas and President Bush with a little black Hitler mustache, on cardboard signs and gather together to wave them and chant at passers-by and the occasional TV camera. They are best ignored at such times, as attention will only encourage the behavior.

    Health and Well-Being

It is important to remember never to taunt or tease your moonbat. If he prefers to dwell in a parallel universe where Al Gore or John Kerry is President and/or all Republicans have been removed from office in a mass impeachment, it is best not to remind him of reality with harsh statements of fact such as, "Get over it, Bush won!" Such statements have been known to cause moonbats to attack viciously. Facts and logic are particularly harmful to moonbats, and must be avoided when interacting with your pet.

The cardinal rule with moonbats is that one must never, ever encourage them to vote or to seek to dwell in a government building, as this would be dangerous to the continued well-being of society! Too many moonbats are already loose in American government at all levels, and it will already take us years to fumigate them all!

Thank you and enjoy your new pet!

    Dr. Wayne Bruce, DVM
    Chief Moonbatologist
American Veterinary Center for the Study of Common Household Pests and Other Useless Vermin

  • Illiterate Headline Writers

One of my pet peeves. Here's the Associated Press Headline:

    Bush Defends Domestic Spying Program

The Deb Reichmann story says little. It's very brief and factual, merely reporting some statements by President Bush at Brooke Army Medical Center. Seemingly the only reason for the story is to give the AP a chance to publish the headline.

The headline. "Bush defends domestic spying program." What could be wrong with that? The main thrust of it, that's all. The NSA program whereby international communications are intercepted is directed at communications to and from foreign individuals associated with terrorism. If there are individuals in this country whose communications have been intercepted it's because those individuals have, in some way, been associated with foreign sources of terrorism.

To headline it as a "domestic spying program" is either intentionally misleading, or the headline writer is very poorly informed., to say the least. If the writer believes that "domestic spying program" accurately describes the NSA activities then my headline, "illiterate headline writers," is accurate.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR...

...from all of us here at The Right Place!

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne!

Chorus.-For auld lang syne, my dear,
    For auld lang syne.
    We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

    Better Days

And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

    So take these words
    And sing out loud
    Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

And it's someplace simple where we could live
And something only you can give
And thats faith and trust and peace while we're alive
And the one poor child that saved this world
And there's 10 million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

    So take these words
    And sing out loud
    Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

I wish everyone was loved tonight
And somehow stop this endless fight
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

    So take these words
    And sing out loud
    Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

And I'm not even a bit miffed that Mr. Right continues to diss me in the caption contest. Not a bit.

    The Destruction of Security

If you were ambivalent about the ACLU and civil liberty attorneys with their attacks on religion or their defense of the sick and depraved (namely NAMBLA) over our children, maybe this will finally change your mind. The ACLU and various "civil liberty" attorneys are filing motions and possibly civil suits against the President over information that may or may not have come from the NSA information gathering techniques. Which the liberals like to call "wiretapping."

One example of this is the case of Iyman Faris of Ohio. This man admitted that he was involved in a plot to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge, yet he now has an attorney, David B. Smith, who is filing a motion to find out if the information that led to his client's arrest was acquired through the NSA and their supposed use of illegal "wiretaps." Mr. Smith said that they are also considering a civil suit against President Bush for making Mr. Faris a target of an illegal wiretap.

Now the use of the term "wiretap" is incorrect. There were no specific taps on any specific phone of any specific person. That would be an illegal wiretap. What is really happening is a massive amount of information is being gathered by different techniques and then the information is gleaned for any references to known terrorists groups or individuals. This is how both Mr. Faris and the so-called Lakawanna Six were found out.

By filing these suits against the NSA and President Bush, these attorneys as well as many of the liberal left, including the New York Times who originally broke the story, are hoping to expose our government's information gathering techniques. Not only would this destroy one way we are being protected from terrorists, but it would also give crucial information to the terrorists. They will find out how the NSA is gathering information and they will change their ways of communicating, leaving the NSA to start all over again to try and find out information on our enemies!

This is an example of how the ACLU, civil liberty attorneys and the liberal left, through their absolute hatred of President Bush, would like to see our country fail in the war against terror. I keep thinking of the liberal left being the "Tokyo Rose" of the war on terror. Here is a little food for thought: Had this information gathering technique been in use prior to 9/11, the communications between Mohammed Atta and several of the other hijackers would have been exposed and the attack of 9/11 could very well have been stopped!

Information gathered from: Rightwing Nuthouse and Washington Post Op-Ed by David Ignatius.

    Some Sad News

One of our fellow bloggers here at The Right Place, T.M. Ergin, also known to many as Giacomo of Joust the Facts, wrote to me to let me know that his Father passed away suddenly earlier this week.

Please remember T.M. and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

He has promised to return to blogging sometime soon.
