I Wonder If He'll Call It "Newspeak"

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is banning words from use in Iran.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language, such as "pizzas" which will now be known as "elastic loaves," state media reported Saturday.

"Elastic loaves" just doesn't do it. "Oh, most esteemed purveyor of sustenance, I'd like an elastic loaf to go, extra dairy curd, no anchovies please. Allah be praised."

The presidential decree, issued earlier this week, orders all governmental
agencies, newspapers and publications to use words deemed more appropriate by
the official language watchdog, the Farhangestan Zaban e Farsi, or Persian
Academy, the Irna official news agency reported.

Next thing you know he'll be proclaiming that War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. How about a Ministry of Love?

Marathon Pundit to Be Featured on Constitutional Public Radio

A good friend of this blog, John Ruberry of Marathon Pundit is scheduled to appear on the radio, and you can listen via the Internet!

As John blogs about here, he will be on live, Thursday July 27th at 4:05pm EDT, 3:05pm CDT on WWBC (1510 AM) in SE Florida. The whole thing was arranged by another good friend of this blog, THIRDWAVEDAVE, who has been a big advocate of this particular program and has arranged for other fine bloggers to appear on it as well!

Congratulations, John and all the best!

Wictory Wednesday - July 26, 2006

After a brief absence... it's baaaa-aaack!

Time for another Wictory Wednesday post. Take it away, John Bambenek...

This week Wictory Wednesday presents Doug Lamborn for Congress for the 5th District of Colorado.

Doug Lamborn is a solid conservative with a history of fiscal restraint. He supports reforming education to give more choices to parents instead of dumping more money into a bloated bureaucracy. He believes there should be little to no federal role in education as those decision should be best left up to local areas to determine their own needs. Education is the absolute key to continued economic development and sustainability and it is clear that school choice will once again produce schools and students who are representative of the greatness of this nation.

Senator Lamborn understands that the problem with health care in the United States is not because the government isn't in charge, but because the government has skewed the incentive system away from consumers. The solution isn't to remove the consumer even farther from the equation, but to put the consumer square in the middle and allow them to make flexible choices for their own health care.

The use of eminent domain to take property from the disenfranchised and give it to the enfranchised has left those on all parts of the political spectrum a sense of fear. It was only a matter of time when the Court gave local governments the right to kick people out of their homes that those governments would stop paying fair market value for the properties they seized. Senator Lamborn understands private property rights as a foundational aspect of our society, government, and nation. Our freedoms are not something granted by the government out if its magnimity, but these are rights inherent in our society that the government is not free to intrude upon.

Senator Lamborn has won endorsements from the NRA, the National Pro-Life Alliance, and the Club for Growth as well as many other conservative endorsements. Please consider helping Doug Lamborn win in November by contributing or volunteering for his campaign.

This has been a production of the Wictory Wednesday blogburst. If you would like to join Wictory Wednesday, please see this post or contact John Bambenek at jcb (dot) blog [at] gmail {dot} com.

Do you blog? Instead of just expressing anger and dismay at what is going on in Washington, D.C., please join us in working to increase Republican majorities, elect more conservatives and defeat liberals everywhere. It is the only way we will ever win!

Remember: Refusing to support Republicans won't hurt the RINO factions, it will only help Democrats and their far-left liberal kook base seize power! Thank you.

******************************

As an aside, I'd like to take a moment to thank LordFloppington of Imaginary Conversations and Random Thoughts for attempting to pick up the Wictory Wednesday ball last week. Though I missed it at the time, he provided an alternate post for last Wednesday, which can be found here. You may agree with his chosen candidate or not, but the alternative is, as usual, far, far worse!!!

On to victory, fellow Republicans, for defeat is not an option, it would be nothing short of a national tragedy! Please help us.

U.N. Works for Peace

Ah, yes, the U.N., keeping the world safe for tyrants and terrorists since 1945.

    More Neat Ogmeet Stuff

For anyone interested in seeing and reading more about Ogmeet 2006, here are links to some of the other attendees' posts...

Leslie the Omnibus Driver from Leslie's Omnibus has a full recap of Friday night's events and promises more to come.

The event's namesake, Og the Neanderpundit, whom I will have to get an opportunity to meet next time, gives his wrap up here.

JimmyB, the Conservative UAW Guy, checks in with his own account.

As I linked earlier, Windypundit has pictures from Day 1, but as I have NOT linked until now, he also has pictures from Day 2 as well!

Meanwhile, as a result of a discussion with Leslie, Bruce from the Conservative Cat is now putting together a blogroll of Illinois bloggers. If you are from Illinois and you blog, please sign up!

Also, in my last post about Ogmeet, I linked to Grant's mostly unused blog. Instead, I probably should have given him a plug for his wonderful professional website, Grantastic Designs. Oversight corrected.

And if you still crave more, you can read about the portions of Ogmeet I missed from some of the folks I never met:

That 1 Guy from Drunken Wisdom
    Tammi from Tammi's World
Biloxi from the Republic of Biloxi

    Things I'm Working On...

Sorry for the delay, but I've been quite busy the last few days!

The season one photo caption contest finale judging is almost complete. I expect to post it sometime tonight.

I will then set about the task of the final tally of points and post the season one CapHOG Championship within the next few days (tomorrow at the earliest).

I also have some more links related to Ogmeet to share with you tonight or tomorrow.

I want to update my blogroll a bit when I can find the time.

Beyond that, I have a new idea for a humor post that I think may be to the liking of many of you... IF I can get the kinks worked out, but it may take a few more days.

In the meantime, be sure to check out the folks on my blogroll, especially my Frequent Flyers Club (expanding soon - maybe next week).

As always, thank you for visiting The Right Place!

Recipient Of Large Donations Sought ...

    ... must be discreet.

The Washington Post today carries a story describing a group of left-wing liberals with deep pockets looking to fund liberal think tanks and projects, in an effort to make left-wing policies and thought more appealing, and with perhaps a more sound philosophical foundation. This is all well and good, as there are certainly a number of well-funded conservative think tanks and policy groups, such as the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, that have had a great influence on political thought. Balancing that with thoughtful liberal policy options is what the process in America is all about.

    Except there are three problems.

An alliance of nearly a hundred of the nation's wealthiest donors is roiling Democratic political circles, directing more than $50 million in the past nine months to liberal think tanks and advocacy groups in what organizers say is the first installment of a long-term campaign to compete more aggressively against conservatives.

A year after its founding, Democracy Alliance has followed up on its pledge to become a major power in the liberal movement. It has lavished millions on groups that have been willing to submit to its extensive screening process and its demands for secrecy.

    [...]

But the large checks and demanding style wielded by Democracy Alliance organizers in recent months have caused unease among Washington's community of Democratic-linked organizations. The alliance has required organizations that receive its endorsement to sign agreements shielding the identity of donors. Public interest groups said the alliance represents a large source of undisclosed and unaccountable political influence.

Democracy Alliance also has left some Washington political activists concerned about what they perceive as a distinctly liberal tilt to the group's funding decisions. Some activists said they worry that the alliance's new clout may lead to groups with a more centrist ideology becoming starved for resources.

Democracy Alliance was formed last year with major backing from billionaires such as financier George Soros and Colorado software entrepreneur Tim Gill. The inspiration, according to founders, was a belief that Democrats became the minority party in part because liberals do not have a well-funded network of policy shops, watchdog groups and training centers for activists equivalent to what has existed for years on the right.

Problem #1: Secrecy of the donors? Sure, this is a group of private donors funding private organizations, but their aim is for public policy influence. If you want to influence public policy, shouldn't your funding sources, i.e., those seeking that public policy influence, be public knowledge? One of the prime alternatives to McCain-Feingold in political financing was for unlimited donations, but immediate and complete disclosure of all donations, with even the members of PACs identified. Sure, money can influence politics; it has a much more sinister influence when its origin is hidden.

Problem #2: More liberal = more funding? This is a part of what I've called in the past the "culture of arrogance." Conservatives in particular, but centrists also, are simply stupid. They simply can't comprehend the brilliance of far left ideology, and therefore if only the proponents of that far-left ideology had more money to push it, they'd succeed. But neither of these premises is true. Conservatives and centrists are not "simply stupid." They've looked in detail at the left's ideas, looked at the history of those ideas in action, and looked at the denial of human nature and the desire for freedom necessary to make them happen, and found them lacking in all areas. All the money in the world will not be able to change those facts, and that history. Benevolent coercion "for the betterment of society" is still coercion.

Problem #3: The success of the conservative think tanks and other organizations has not been due to their funding, or their organization, it's been due to their ideas. And those ideas tend toward a general distrust of government intervention in the lives of the governed, a general belief that capitalism with a market economy is the most efficient and effective way of distributing and utilizing resources, with the greatest potential for betterment of the human condition through economic growth, and toward the realization that the goal of men and women to live their lives in freedom is at the heart of all mankind. Those are hard ideas to argue against.

But, have at it. I'll listen listen to your argument, then dissect it.

    Ogmeet 2006

Last night, Ogmeet 2006 kicked off with a small, intimate group of bloggers getting together at the Stonewood Ale House in Schaumburg, IL for dinner and drinks.

It was fascinating to be able to meet a number of people I had come to "know" a bit online over the past couple of years, as well as a couple of new folks that I hope to get to know better in the future.

So, you are probably asking by now, who was there? Other than myself and my wife, of course... Well, I can now say that I have met the following people live and in person. I think I'll be adding a new category to the blogroll for that soon:

Leslie of LESLIE'S OMNIBUS, who seems to live for these sorts of events, and who did a great job putting this thing together.

Bruce the Human Pet & Peg-Eye Nate of THE CONSERVATIVE CAT, who got permission from Ferdy to take the night off and attend, and earned the title for the biggest celebrities in attendance.

JimmyB of THE CONSERVATIVE UAW GUY, who drove in from Ohio and was packing heat back at the hotel in anticipation of today's shooting excursion.

Mark of WINDYPUNDIT, who kept busy showing off, and putting to good use, his fancy digital camera.

Grant of C-SPOT, a technology buff who spent much of the night talking shop with my computer teacher wife.

A small but enthusiastic crowd who enjoyed some good food and conversation. According to my sources, there were several others who were in town last night that struck out on their own for a side excursion. Hmmmmm...

Much more is happening today, though I, sadly, am not likely to make it to any of the events that were planned. Leslie was taking a small group to downtown Chicago to see Millennium Park, among other things. Og was hosting the shooting party in Buffalo Grove, which JimmyB was looking forward to. There is another dinner and drinks gathering in Cicero later on, as well.

Those of you looking for pictures, go over and have a look at Windypundit, who has some posted on his site along with links to a gallery and a slideshow. Just promise not to be too disappointed when you see me. Clark Gable I'm not. Oh, and you'll have to click on one of his links for a photo that ID's me. Of course, this means my cover is blown. Oh, well. Maybe I can sue ala Val "Vanity Fair Cover(t) Girl" Plame.

The Carnival of the Clueless Returns; Wide Awakes Radio Is in Full Swing!!!

Rick Moran, one of the finest essayists on the web, has decided to resurrect the sorely missed Carnival of the Clueless, and this week's installment is up and waiting!

Rick admits to ulterior motives, however. You see, he is doing it to cross promote his new Wide Awakes Radio program. It seems Rick is the weekday morning host, which makes him something of an Internet radio superstar, if there is such a thing yet. You can get the details at Rick's blog, Right Wing Nut House, and also go there to click to listen to his show live Monday thru Friday mornings (the link is in upper left margin). Congratulations Rick!

This W.A.R. thing could really take off! The list of talent they have lined up is absolutely amazing! Some other personal favorites involved:

    Buckley F. Williams
    Potfry
    Jake Jacobsen
    John Bambenek
    Basil
    John Stephenson
    Pamela
    Cao

And this has got to be a hoot...

    Misha

Good thing it's the Internet and not the airwaves! Misha can be damned funny, but he pulls no punches and the language on his blog could make a sailor blush at times!

And there are many more! Among those listed on the blogroll and apparently lined up for sometime in the future...

    Gateway Pundit

The whole thing is the brainchild of this character right here...

    Kender

Good luck, guys and gals! I hope it's a big hit!

Now, if only I had high-speed Internet! Gawd, how I hate dial-up! The only trouble is, I can't afford $60 per month for cable and DSL isn't offered in my area yet! AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!

For those of you who live somewhere in the 21st Century, let me know what I'm missing. I'm really curious as to how this experiment is going. Thanks!

    MIDWEST BLOGMEET UPDATE!

Bingo! The Blogmeet scheduled for this weekend has a name-o...

"OGMEET" - in honor of Og the Neanderpundit, who started the ball rolling on this shindig!

Leslie of Leslie's Omnibus has taken care of many of the arrangements, and the details are now posted right here for all to see.

Og has arranged a trip to the shooting range on Saturday morning for those of you looking to shoot something off other than your mouths, and gives everyone the detailed rundown on that excursion here.

You may bother Leslie at Omnibus-dot-Driver-at-gmail-dot-com or Og at mhardig-at-aol-dot-com if you need any further information, as I am only an innocent bystander!

If you are hoping to meet me, I plan on being there sometime on Friday night at The Stonewood Ale House in Schaumburg with my lovely wife in tow. Leslie will be there wearing a Stetson, Og will not be able to make it due to his having oral surgery that day. I am not certain if I will make any of the other events this weekend at this stage of the game.

I hope to actually meet some of you there, though so far, I don't know too many of the players very well at all. Should be interesting, though, and I'll likely blog something about it when I get the chance! If you plan on showing up, let me know and I'll look for you there!

    It's party time!!!
